WGA Threatens to Sue Amazon Studios: Check Out Our Latest Breaking Story
The guild is weighing legal action against the streamer
Hollywood is getting back to work in fits and starts. Some writers tell me they’ve dived back into the world of Final Draft and writers rooms; others tell me they’re still waiting for business affairs to pick up where things left off on projects before the 148-day strike began.
At least one studio is still in limbo. I just broke news over at The Ankler that the Writers Guild of America is alleging that Amazon Studios is in breach of the strike tentative agreement by not bringing “a number of” writers rooms back after the strike ended two months ago. Marvel’s Silk: Spider Society is one of the shows said to be affected. Amazon Studios declined to comment but the WGA had some thoughts to share… Here’s the statement the guild exclusively shared with me at The Ankler:
WGAW has notified Amazon Studios that their failure to recommence a number of writing rooms after the strike is a violation of the Strike Termination Agreement (STA) between the WGA and AMPTP and Article 7 of the MBA. Studios are obligated to return writers to work “upon termination of the strike,” and writers’ Personal Services Agreements were extended for a period equal to the portion of the contract term that elapsed during the strike. The Guild will bring legal action against Amazon and any other studio that violates the STA to recover compensation, interest on late payments, and benefit contributions due as a result of the delay.
